Aspen House, Queenstown

Set against the Queenstown landscape, Aspen House is a refined residential project that explores light, materiality and texture through a restrained architectural lens. Designed by Spatial Studio and applied by Make It Mint, the interiors are defined by seamless Venetian plaster surfaces that bring depth, softness and cohesion to the home.

Novacolor Calce Cruda Venetian plaster was selected to create a natural, light-responsive wall finish across key spaces including the entry, staircases, powder room and media room. This lime- and clay-based plaster delivers a soft, matte surface with subtle tonal variation, offering a sophisticated alternative to paint for modern residential interiors.

The intention was to achieve a surface with enough depth to catch both soft and direct light. The resulting finish enhances the architecture, allowing each space to shift throughout the day as light interacts with the textured surface.

Hand-applied by Make It Mint, the Venetian plaster has been carefully layered to achieve a consistent yet nuanced finish. The material introduces warmth and tactility without visual heaviness, reinforcing a calm, cohesive palette throughout the home.

Calce Cruda is widely specified across New Zealand for its breathable composition and natural finish. Over time, the surface continues to evolve, developing character while maintaining durability, making it well suited to high-end residential projects where longevity and material integrity are essential.

This project reflects a considered approach to architectural finishes, where Venetian plaster becomes an integral part of the design language rather than a surface treatment.
