The complete guide to Venetian plaster in New Zealand
Venetian plaster is one of the most distinctive ways to bring depth, texture and materiality into an interior.
Unlike paint, which creates a uniform layer of colour, Venetian plaster is applied by hand in multiple layers. The movement of the trowel, natural minerals within the plaster and the way the surface interacts with light all contribute to a finish that feels unique to the space.
And Venetian plaster doesn't necessarily mean highly polished or marble-like.
Contemporary Venetian plaster encompasses everything from soft, chalky lime finishes and subtle tonal movement through to heavily textured stone effects, polished surfaces and metallic finishes.
Whether you're designing a new home, renovating, creating a feature wall or specifying finishes for a commercial interior, this guide covers everything you need to know about Venetian plaster in New Zealand.
This guide answers some of the most common questions we receive, including:
At The Finish, we specialise in premium architectural surface finishes and are the New Zealand distributor of Novacolor, one of Italy's leading manufacturers of decorative architectural finishes.
We support projects from early finish selection and specification through to samples, product supply and installation through our nationwide network of trained applicators.
What is Venetian plaster?
Venetian plaster is a decorative wall finish traditionally made using mineral ingredients such as lime, marble powders, clays and natural aggregates.
Applied by hand in several thin layers, the material is worked with specialist trowels to create depth, movement and texture across the surface.
Rather than sitting completely flat like paint, Venetian plaster responds to both the applicator's technique and the light within the space.
The result can range from incredibly subtle to highly expressive.
Depending on the product and application technique, Venetian plaster can create:
Soft matte lime finishes
Natural tonal movement
Smooth stone-like surfaces
Textured mineral finishes
Polished plaster
Marble-inspired effects
Clay finishes
Concrete-inspired surfaces
Metallic effects
Highly polished finishes
Because every surface is applied by hand, no two installations will ever look exactly the same.
Why choose Venetian plaster?
One of the biggest reasons architects and interior designers choose Venetian plaster is its ability to introduce materiality without overwhelming a space.
It can be quiet and understated or become the defining feature of an interior.
Some of the key benefits include:
Handcrafted architectural finish
Natural depth and tonal variation
Available in smooth, matte, polished and heavily textured finishes
Extensive colour options
Suitable for residential and commercial interiors
Can be used across walls and ceilings
Excellent for large feature surfaces
Creates different effects as natural and artificial light changes
Long-lasting when correctly applied
Available in mineral and lime-based systems
Completely customisable through application technique
Where paint provides colour, Venetian plaster provides colour, texture and movement.
It becomes part of the architecture rather than simply a coating applied over it.
Where can Venetian plaster be used?
Living spaces
Large walls are particularly suited to Venetian plaster because they allow the natural movement of the finish to become visible.
Popular applications include:
Living room walls
Feature walls
Fireplace surrounds
Entranceways
Stairwells
Hallways
Dining areas
Bedrooms
Home offices
Ceilings
Neutral mineral finishes can create subtle texture across an entire room, while more expressive finishes can be used selectively as an architectural feature.
Commercial interiors
Venetian plaster works particularly well in commercial spaces where the finish itself contributes to the overall customer experience.
It is commonly specified for:
Restaurants
Cafés
Retail stores
Hotels
Offices
Reception areas
Showrooms
Salons
Wellness spaces
Hospitality interiors
Because the finish is handcrafted, Venetian plaster can also be customised to reflect the material palette and design language of a particular brand or project.
What types of Venetian plaster are available?
One of the biggest misconceptions about Venetian plaster is that every finish is polished and shiny. In reality, contemporary Venetian plaster includes an enormous range of textures.
At The Finish, we work with the Italian Novacolor collection, which allows designers to achieve everything from understated lime surfaces to heavily textured architectural finishes.
A metallic plaster with soft undertones and layered movement.
A smooth Venetian plaster finish with tonal variation.
A textured Venetian plaster range defined by natural aggregates.
A smooth, polished plaster with a soft sheen and fluid movement.
A fine, matte clay plaster with a delicate, powdery texture.
A smooth, semi-polished Venetian plaster with a marble-like finish.
An ultra-gloss Venetian plaster
A softly textured lime and clay plaster with a natural, matte finish.
A heavily textured plaster that mimics natural stone.
A softly textured Venetian plaster with natural tonal variation.
Venetian plaster vs paint
Paint and Venetian plaster perform very different roles within an interior. Paint is designed to provide a relatively uniform colour across a surface.
Venetian plaster is designed to create a surface with visible materiality. Venetian plaster isn't generally selected because it is an alternative way to paint a wall.
It is chosen because the wall itself becomes an architectural finish.

Venetian plaster vs microcement
Venetian plaster and microcement are sometimes grouped together because both are hand-applied decorative finishes.
Their performance and ideal applications are very different.
Microcement
Best suited to:
Bathrooms
Showers
Floors
Splashbacks
Benchtops
Joinery
High-use surfaces
Commercial environments
Venetian Plaster
Best suited to:
Interior walls
Ceilings
Feature surfaces
Decorative applications
Low to moderate wear areas
Microcement is a technical, multi-layer surface system designed to provide considerably greater resistance to water, wear and everyday use.
A simple way of thinking about the two:
Venetian plaster is primarily selected for decorative materiality.
Microcement is selected when you want a similar seamless aesthetic with higher performance requirements.
Can Venetian plaster be used in bathrooms?
We generally don't recommend Venetian plaster for areas exposed to direct or constant water.
For showers and full wet areas, we recommend one of our microcement systems instead.
Microcement is specifically designed for these higher-performance applications and can be installed as part of a complete wet-area system.
Venetian plaster can still be considered for decorative bathroom walls outside direct wet zones, depending on the particular product, substrate and project requirements.
If you're unsure which system you need, send us your plans and our team can recommend the most appropriate finish.
How much does Venetian plaster cost in NZ?
Professionally installed Venetian plaster typically starts from around $150/m², depending on the selected finish and project.
Venetian plaster should be considered a premium handcrafted architectural finish rather than a direct substitute for standard paint.
Every project is different and pricing can be influenced by:
Selected Venetian plaster finish
Size of the area
Height of walls
Condition of the substrate
Preparation required
Number of corners and junctions
Scaffolding or access requirements
Complexity of the application technique
Location
Residential or commercial requirements
More detailed or highly textured finishes can require considerably more material and application time than a relatively simple Marmorino finish.
Smaller projects may also be subject to minimum project charges because the applicator still needs to allow for preparation, travel, setup and multiple application stages.
For the most accurate indication, send us your plans, approximate square metres and preferred finish.
What Venetian plaster colours are available?
Venetian plaster doesn't have to be beige.
While warm whites and natural neutrals remain extremely popular, our colour collection extends across a broad spectrum.
Popular colour directions include:
Warm whites
Creams
Soft greys
Charcoals
Earth tones
Olive and sage greens
Terracotta tones
We also offer custom colour matching for projects requiring a specific colour direction.
What surfaces can Venetian plaster be applied to?
Venetian plaster can be applied to a range of correctly prepared substrates, including:
Plasterboard
Existing plaster
Concrete
Cement board
Previously painted surfaces
The quality of the substrate is extremely important.
For plasterboard walls, we typically require a Level 4 paint finish with no visible fixings before Venetian plaster application begins.
Decorative plaster is very different from a thick levelling compound. It follows the surface beneath it, which means poor preparation can become visible in the finished wall.
For new builds, involving the Venetian plaster applicator early also allows junctions, trims, negative details and other architectural elements to be considered before finishing work begins.
Yes.
When the substrate has been correctly prepared and the system professionally applied, Venetian plaster is an extremely durable interior wall finish.
Unlike a manufactured panel or printed surface, mineral plaster also tends to age naturally, with subtle variation forming part of its character.
However, Venetian plaster should still be treated as an architectural wall finish.
Areas subject to constant impact, abrasion, standing water or heavy wear may be better suited to microcement or another higher-performance surface system.
Our Venetian plaster range is supported by a 10-year product warranty when applicable warranty requirements are met.
Is Venetian plaster durable?
How do you clean Venetian plaster?
Venetian plaster is relatively simple to maintain.
For everyday cleaning, use:
A soft cloth
Microfibre cloth
Warm water where appropriate
Mild pH-neutral cleaning products where required
Avoid aggressive scrubbing and highly abrasive cleaning products.
The exact care requirements can vary depending on the particular finish, so we recommend following the care instructions provided for your selected system.
Like natural stone, timber and other material-led finishes, appropriate care helps maintain the character of the surface over time.
How do I choose the right Venetian plaster?
For soft and understated:
For a more textured look:
For something more expressive:
Why choose Novacolor Venetian plaster?
Novacolor is an Italian manufacturer specialising in architectural decorative finishes.
Rather than offering a single Venetian plaster product, the Novacolor collection gives designers access to a broad material palette spanning lime, clay, marble, mineral aggregate and contemporary decorative finishes.
This means we're able to specify the finish around the project rather than attempting to make one product achieve every aesthetic.
From the restrained movement of Marmorino KS to the tactile character of Calce Cruda, stone-like Archi+ Pietra and highly expressive Materia Viva, the collection offers enormous creative flexibility.
